…they sound like a watered-down, less-musical version of The Hush Sound or New Pornographers.

I dunno. “Watered down?” Sounds more like one of them concentrated fruit juices mixed with vodka to me.
Also, this is one of them “glass is half empty” sort of comments. He could easily have said a “more musical version of balloons popping or Gregorian Monk Drinking games” and been a little more “half-full” about it.
