Portland Mercury preview of our show at Dante’s

Monday, July 20th, 2009

The kind folks at The Portland Mercury wrote a nice blurb for our show at Dante’s last night:

“I want to quit my job, burn my house to the ground (or maybe just sell it), and join Balthrop, Alabama. This 11-piece ragtag Brooklyn ensemble of Southerners—Alabamans, to be exact—thrives with a vivacious theatrical flair, using their indie pop leanings (the wit of Magnetic Fields, the urgency of Arcade Fire) to create an entire movement in the guise of a rock ‘n’ roll band. They are literally their own community (“population 11″), and keep the conceptual theme going with short EPs that wondrously follow certain topics—Subway Songs, Cowboy Songs—to their end. Tonight you will be tempted to shed your former life and hop onstage to join the band. Why not make it an even dozen?”

Here’s a snippet…

The band Balthrop, Alabama does not hail from Balthrop, Alabama, because such a town does not exist. Its two primary members—siblings Lauren and Pascal Balthrop—grew up in Mobile, but nowadays live about four blocks away from each other in Brooklyn’s Carroll Gardens neighborhood.

Review of the week

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Sometimes for fun I like to google our band and see what people are saying. I love finding little gems like this:

…they sound like a watered-down, less-musical version of The Hush Sound or New Pornographers.

Hahahaha!
